Dynamics Tutorials

These tutorials take flowsheets from steady state into time: holdups that fill and empty, valves that turn pressure into flow, controllers that hold a level or a pressure, events that change a feed or a setpoint while the clock runs. You should be comfortable with the Intermediate Track before starting here; every dynamic run begins from a converged steady state.

Tutorials

  1. From Steady State to Dynamic - A tank between two valves: Dynamic Mode, holdup volume, Kv valves, pressure and flow specifications, the integrator, the schedule and the results spreadsheet.

  2. PID Level Control - A level controller on the tank: wiring, direction, offset and span, proportional offset, integral action, manual mode, stored states, tuning too high and too low.

  3. Separator Pressure and Level Control - Two loops on one vessel: pressure through the gas valve, level through the liquid valve, and setpoint changes scheduled as events.

  4. Events, Schedules and States - Event sets with steps and ramps, gauges with alarms, a cause-and-effect matrix, stored states and the historian.

  5. Reactors and Exchangers in Dynamics - A CSTR that heats up when the duty changes and a heat exchanger with wall thermal mass, from the shipped samples.

  6. Custom Controllers and Networks - A Python controller written by hand, and the district water network whose tank level is held by a pressure-reducing valve.
